We all know that we need oxygen to survive. But breathing air in is only the first step. The oxygen that we breathe in then gets absorbed through the lining of our lungs into our bloodstream. There, it gets picked up in our blood and carried by a molecule called Haemoglobin (medical abbreviation Hb), which takes it to the cells in our body where it is needed and is used to keep the cells working. Your blood oxygen level gives you an idea of how much oxygen there is in your bloodstream at any one.

Measuring your heart rate is a key way to measure your fitness levels. The two main measurements are ‘resting heart rate’, which refers to the number of times your heart beats per minute when you’re not exercising, and ‘exercise heart rate’, or your beats per minute during exercise. Monitoring how quickly your heart rate returns to normal is a major indicator of your overall fitness.
