When head lice or nits come home, you need to act quickly to eradicate the unwanted pests. A combination of different head lice treatments can be used for best effects, and all members of the family who have lice and/or nits should be treated together. Bed linen and towels should be washed in hot water and tumble-dried on high for 20 minutes. Hairbrushes and combs should also be soaked in hot water. The tiny, creamy-white eggs (the nits) are attached to the base of the hair shaft and can be removed by a metal fine-toothed comb. Wet combing, where a conditioner is applied to stun the head lice, followed by systematic combing with a fine-toothed comb and, finally washing the conditioner out, should be repeated on alternate days for three weeks.
