Make up tips for women in their 40s

"Less is more” when it comes to make-up application when you’re in your forties.

PRIMERS

  • Look for primers that illuminate, and use a minimising primer for noticeable pores.

FOUNDATION

  • Stay away from pancake foundations or liquid foundations that are thick or matte. Use an illuminating foundation with a soft, dewy formula.
  • If you’re prone to break-outs, use a mineral foundation.
  • Don’t use too much foundation… apply to the centre of the face and blend outwards.

BLUSHER

  • Blusher is a must. As we age our skin becomes dull and slightly more grey in tone.
  • Adding a creme blush to the apple of the cheek creates colour and a healthy sheen.
  • Keep to softer colours – peaches and pinks. If your skin is darker go for brighter tones.

EYE SHADOWS

  • Retire your glittery shadows. Open up eyes and make them pop by applying a light mid-satin shadow to the inner corners, in a C shape.
  • Keep to soft taupes and browns. Hug the lash line with the darker colour and gently blend softer tones to the crease.

LASHES

  • Curl lashes and apply mascara by starting at the roots and wiggling the wand up and out. Use lash-building mascaras, they come with a primer that helps make lashes look thicker.

BROWS

  • Defining brows is important but keep them soft and feathery, use powder and set with a brow gel.
  • Go a couple of shades lighter than your natural hair colour.

LIPS

  • Lip primer or fixing spray applied pre-lipstick application stops lipstick bleeding into lines around the mouth. If your lips are disappearing, line outside the lip line and stick to mid-tone colours. A little gloss dabbed at the centre of your lips will make them appear fuller.
