There is one New Year’s resolution that’s so easy to stick to and will pay dividends in years (and years!) to come. We’re talking about mastering your regular skincare routine, so you look radiant and healthy all year round.
Cleansing and moisturising might sound like just another thing to add to your ‘To do’ list, but as well as enabling your skin to naturally repair and rejuvenate overnight, you’ll feel great as your head hits the pillow and wake radiant and refreshed. And what’s better than that?
Plus, it means you can forgive yourself for those occasional nights in the year when you are just too tired to do it.
Implementing a great cleansing routine might not seem important, but all those nourishing goodies you put on your skin - the serums and overnight potions packed with vitamins A (retinol), E, C, plus omega fatty acids - are only truly effective when they’re applied on a clean, exfoliated skin. Otherwise, it’s literally money down the drain (or on the pillow!).

Just as our busy lives have sped up, so has the increase in pollution and toxic microparticles, from car emissions to tobacco smoke. Add to that our makeup and we’re talking super clogged pores. Yikes!
A great cleansing routine is all about removing everything that you apply on your skin or that lands on it throughout the day, then opening your pores ready to absorb your potent antioxidant ingredients from your gorgeous skincare products.
Our skin cells work hard at night repairing damaged skin cells and hydrating and nourishing the skin with oxygen and nutrients from blood cells that enlarge at night to deliver the goods while you sleep. So let’s get started!
Starting your 2019 skin routine the right way
There are loads of ways to make your skin care routine easy and fun. You can even begin while talking to flatmates, or bingeing YouTube or Netflix.
1. The Pre-Cleanse:
Start by putting a small amount of your favourite cleanser into your palms and rub together to warm and release the oils. Then gently smooth all over your face and massage deep into the skin for at least 2 minutes. An oil-based cleanser is amazing for this (not an exfoliator) but most cleansers will do. Ensure the one you choose does not irritate the eyes.
2. The Cleanse:
Following your pre-cleanse (which feels just glorious when you make the time to sit and enjoy it), start with using a face cloth or a natural silk cloth heated in warm water and rinsed, placed over the face for 1 minute or so to open your pores with the steam. Using the same cloth re-warmed and rinsed, wipe down the face to remove any excess cleanser or oil.
You can then apply more cleanser to the skin, and gently massage with your hands or a soft face brush used in circular movements, and rinse with a splash of warm water to ensure everything is removed. Wipe down with a gentle cloth to reveal your beautiful cleansed and glowing face.
3. The Exfoliant:
Silk exfoliate cloths contain natural proteins which energise skin. Or you can select a face exfoliant product or polish. Pop a pea-sized amount into your fingertips, rub together then massage gently over your face in circular movements. Don’t push into the skin, and don’t overwork it. Rinse with warm water and pat dry to reveal a silky smooth faced new you!
4. The Moisturiser or Serum:
Overnight moisturisers and serums are best when they contain active ingredients high in antioxidants. Oxidation is what causes premature ageing and skin degradation, so antioxidants help repair damage.
Oxidation occurs when free radicals attack the cells in your body, from air pollution, sun damage, blue light from mobile phones and when we apply products to our skin with a high toxic load.
So choosing your nightly potions is important to help rejuvenate your skin when you’re sleeping and keep your skin youthful. Look for these key ingredients: vitamin C, retinol (vitamin A), vitamin E, peptides, resveratrol, coenzyme Q10, niacinamide (vitamin B3), polyphenol (plant-based vitamin), flavonoids, glutathione, and omega fatty acids, and you’ll stay forever young!
Apply generously over the face and neck and down to the clavicle area of the chest massaging lightly.
5. The Mask:
Masks are another fab binge-watching activity that can be enjoyed with friends. Applying a mask once or twice a week works deep into the pores to remove impurities that can build up and cause skin irritation and acne. It can also be nurturing and nourishing to the skin with a super boost of antioxidants and ingredients that hydrate and plump your skin leaving you fresh-faced and really to slay the next day.
Bring your A game in 2019!!
Yes, we know this could add more to your already full life, but this is time invested in you that really will help your skin stay supple and hydrated. So instead of thinking of it as a chore, flip the script and think of it as a pampering moment that’s a whole lot cheaper than booking in for a spa treatment.
Boosting your skin with powerful natural ingredients and potent antioxidants that have proven to work is your way of rewarding your body for all the amazing work it does to keep you looking great.
