Meningococcal Vaccination

Meningococcal vaccines protect against the bacteria that cause meningococcal disease. Meningococcal disease is a bacterial infection transmitted through saliva and can cause two very serious illnesses — meningitis and blood poisoning (septicaemia). These can lead to permanent disability, deafness, or even death.

Meningococcal disease

Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection that often starts with flu-like symptoms. In most cases (about 80%), a distinctive rash appears that doesn’t fade when pressed. The infection spreads through saliva, meaning activities like kissing or sharing drinks can pass it on.

In New Zealand, meningococcal disease is mainly caused by bacteria from groups A, B, C, W, and Y. It can lead to meningitis, which inflames the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord, or septicemia (blood poisoning), which in severe cases can result in organ failure and even limb loss.
