In 2012, farmers in Otago made a promising and completely unexpected discovery. On Clachanburn Station near Ranfurly in the lower South Island, a milk hand discovered her weathered and work-worn hands had been transformed in just a few weeks. Her hands had become softer and less aged in appearance and her nails, stronger and less prone to breakage. The only difference to her daily routine was milking deer.
This finding inspired the personnel at Clachanburn Station to have the deer milk analysed by a team of scientists from AgResearch who discovered deer milk is rich in retinol (Vitamin A), folic acid (Vitamin B9), anti-oxidants and nutrients (Vitamin E) and anti-inflammatory agents in the form of Vitamin D3, which can help prevent premature ageing. Scientists found deer milk – already proven to have the highest total fat, protein, and casein protein content of any milk available for human nutrition – was also a very rich source of calcium, phosphorus, and zinc.
With the discovery of its multiple minerals, vitamin and proteins, it was identified that 100% New Zealand deer milk has the potential to transform the world of skincare and hence, kōtia was born.
