How to keep your glow all year round

Summer is epic, right? Beaches beckon, there’s a killer lineup of festivals to hit up, and there are infinite BBQs, outdoor parties and weddings that require your babelicious presence. Like no other season, summer is the time to sizzle with your summer glow.

So here are our hottest tips for getting your shimmer on and maintaining that bad boy all year round. But first...

Sun damage: it’s a thing!

We don’t want to be that person, but exposing your bod to the sun’s harmful UV rays does damage your precious skin. Sure, soak up that vitamin D (there’s even an app for that to help you get your optimal boost), and definitely do slip, slop, slap and wrap (any excuse for a cute new sarong, right?), but do understand the following:

  • Broad spectrum is the shield within sunscreen that provides a barrier from UVA rays, which damage the dermis, and UVB rays that damage the epidermis.
  • SPF is sun protection factor and is the length of time a sunscreen will protect the skin from UVB rays that cause redness, sunburn and the most common forms of skin cancer. So if a “burn time” is 10 minutes, an SPF 30 protects for around 5 hours.
  • The higher the SPF the longer the protection so if you’re heading outside, ideally choose a sunscreen from SPF 30 - 50.
  • But it’s very important that you seek shade, and apply a broad spectrum SPF sunscreen no less than every TWO hours.

Short term damage to the skin results in painful sunburn, with long term harm causing premature ageing, skin spots, irregular skin pigmentation, and skin cancer.

Kiwis experience skin cancer at rates higher than anywhere in the world - at a sobering four times that of other western countries including the US, Canada, and the UK. It’s estimated that in New Zealand, our rate of new skin cancers tops 1,300 each week with two-thirds of us Kiwis expected to get a non-melanoma cancer in our lifetime.

Yikes!

And if you’re thinking you’re too young for cancer to affect you, you’d be wrong. For people aged 25 to 44 years old, melanoma is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancer.

Double yikes!

Great news, your summer tan needn’t come from the sun. DIY fake tanning can replace the risks of sun exposure and give you the same gorgeous glow. Plus, it doesn’t matter what the weather is doing outside, you can achieve that sun smart look all year round.

Our 5 tips for applying fake tan like a pro

  1. Exfoliate before you apply:

Shower, shave and exfoliate to remove dead outer skin layers (which don’t need a tan!). Scrub-a-dub from your footsies, ankles, knees, elbows, hands, chesticle area and face (if you’re applying there). This will avoid blotchiness and uneven coverage - and orange elbows!   1. Moisturise with natural oil:

Summer can dry out skin so rub some natural, fragrance-free oil in the palms of your hands and apply a light coverage over your whole body giving most of the love to your footsies, ankles, knees, elbows, hands and face. Let this absorb anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes (yep, it’s a process!).

  1. Go gradual:

You know those body sculpture peeps with the chocolate tan? Yeah, don’t do that. You’re not in a competition to strut your stuff so go for healthy not oompa loompa! But if diving in the deep end and going full tan is not your vibe, start slow by mixing your fave moisturiser 50/50 with fake tan, or choosing a gradual tan product. You can’t apply fake tan in halves, but you can thin it down with a moisturiser, or choose a gradual product from the outset, like the Clinique Body Tinted Lotion.   1. Use a mitt or latex gloves:

Oh girrrrrl, definitely use a mitt! They enable quick application, an even tan, and won’t leave you with a giveaway orange glow on your palms, fingers, knuckles and soaked into the nail beds.   1. Choose a tanning product that is also sun-safe:
