Pain is the body's way of telling us something is wrong. Different types of pain call for different treatments. Pain relief helps relive the symptoms so we can get back to our normal activities. Pain is generally either acute (recently occurring, often short term) or chronic (long lasting, usually associated with a long-term illness) but can also be defined according to the cause. Analgesic drugs (drugs that relieve pain) range from paracetamol to opioid drugs like codeine and morphine. Inflammatory pain can be treated effectively by non- steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Combination drugs such as paracetamol and codeine are available for stronger pain.
